On May 29, 2024, in Hanoi, with the consent of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Vietnam Tobacco Association held a congress to summary the work of the VII term (2019 – 2023) and the direction of activities for the VIII term (2024 – 2029). Attending the Congress was Mr. Vu Chien Thang – Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.
Outstanding results in the VII term (2019 – 2023)
During the VII term (2019 – 2023), the economic situation in Vietnam and in the world has many unpredictable fluctuations, far-reaching impacts on all aspects of socio-economic life and poses unprecedented challenges to Vietnam’s economy. In the context of difficulties and challenges, the Vietnam Tobacco Association had maximized the spirit of solidarity, efforted and determinated to take advantage of opportunities, overcomed challenges, organized production and business flexibly, creatively, completed the set plan, etc to stabilize life and jobs for tens of thousands of workers.
In the period of 2019 – 2023, members of the Association have paid the state budget with a total amount of more than 103,108 billion VND. The Association has 6 enterprises contributing to the state budget at over 1,000 billion VND per year, namely Thang Long Tobacco Company, Saigon Tobacco Company, Khanh Viet Corporation, Saigon Industrial Corporation, Vina – BAT Joint Venture Company and Dong Nai Food Industry Corporation. In particular, with the Fund for Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms, member enterprises have contributed a total amount of more than VND 2,109 billion, an increase of 67.8% compared to the period 2014 – 2018.
Regarding the prevention and control of tobacco smuggling, in the past term, the Association has actively coordinated with the Steering Committee of 389 Countries, 389 localities, functional forces and media agencies to strengthen the prevention and combat of tobacco smuggling. In the period of 2019 – 2023, functional forces have arrested 59,637 cases, the number of arrests reached 37.5 million bags, destroyed 22.1 million bags, prosecuted and tried many organizations and individuals, and confiscated many means of transport.
In addition to production and business tasks, member enterprises have actively implemented social responsibility to the community. In the period of 2019 – 2023, the whole Association has supported 139 heroic Vietnamese mothers and seriously wounded soldiers, donated 374 houses of gratitude, supported the Covid-19 Prevention and Control Fund, donated scholarships, sponsored the “For Children” fund, gave Tet gifts to the poor, etc. The total value of activities in this period reached 377,693.4 million VND, an increase of 2.5 times compared to the previous period.
Directions and tasks of the VIII term (2024 – 2029)
In the VIII term (2024 – 2029), the Vietnam Tobacco Association will expand and admit new members in related industries; promote the activities of professional committees to improve the efficiency of the Association’s operations, consolidate qualified and enthusiastic full-time staff for key departments of the Association. At the same time, the Association will continue to promote the role of a bridge between members, ready to share, exchange and solve problems, create conditions for members to cooperate in the fields of production and business activities and strengthen exchanges on the basis of respecting the rights and interests of the parties. At the same time, focus on international cooperation and law enforcement, actively participate in the prevention and combat of tobacco smuggling.
At the Congress of the new term (2024 – 2029), the delegates elected 21 comrades to the Executive Committee of the Association for the VIII term. On the side of Khanh Viet Corporation, Mr. Tran Minh Quang – In charge of the Board of Members of Khanh Viet Corporation and Mr. Nguyen That Linh – Deputy Director of Khatoco Trading Co., Ltd. were elected to the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Tobacco Association for the VIII term (2024 – 2029), in which Mr. Tran Minh Quang was elected to hold the position of Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Tobacco Association Mr. Dao Dong Phong – Chief Accountant of Khanh Viet Corporation was elected to the Inspection Board of the Vietnam Tobacco Association for the VIII term (2024 – 2029).
